Let it Snow! Slowing Down to Enjoy the Holiday Season

I’ve spent the last week on [basically] an IV of peppermint hot chocolate, and don’t see an end in sight. When it started to snow on Friday, I was in my element, Kenny G’s holiday album playing through the speakers (my sister understands this love). Bottom line: I’m doing everything I can to slow down and enjoy all the simple pleasures of what makes this season so magical.

Most years, I feel the season fly by in a furry, without ever savoring the time as it happens. This year, though, I’m making it my mission to appreciate and spread all of the goodness that the holiday brings. It’s tough when it feels like there is so much to do and take care of, but in the grand scheme of things, so much of our worries aren’t even worth the wrinkles.

My husband can always tell when I’m feeling anxious and, when that happens, he’ll have me list out my anxieties one by one. Nine times out of ten, the minute I start listing them out loud, I instantly realize I’m stressing over nothing. If any of you are fans of the Happier podcast, then you may have heard Gretchen’s advice where she suggests asking yourself, “how would I feel if I weren’t stressing over ____.” I’ve used this technique on countless occasions since then, and almost always find it to calm me down. So many of the things that we find ourselves worrying over are beyond our control. What that means is worrying more or less won’t change the outcome; we just have to wait and see how things turn out. (And if you’re like me, things usually aren’t as bad as I make them out to be in my mind.)

I know that, for many people, the holidays cause a lot of stress, which can in turn mean that we’re not taking the time to enjoy what makes this season so incredibly special. But, I’m encouraging you to try not to let that happen this year.

Appreciate your family and friends, and the time you are able to spend together. Appreciate those snowflakes, and the smells of your favorite winter candles. Appreciate the littlest of moments, and find peace in them.
